Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and mastery of:
    • Injection molded plastic design and analysis
    • Progressive stamping die sheet metal design and analysis
    • Machined parts
    • Electrical contacts/connector systems
    • Design for manufacturing
    • ASME Y14.5 and ASME Y14.100
    • Tolerance Analysis
  • Stress analysis using classical methods, Castigliano's theorem, and SolidWorks Simulation
  • Leading design reviews, phase reviews, PFMEA, DFMEA, and similar reviews
  • 3D modeling, CAD design using SolidWorks
  • Producing and reviewing product documentation including drawings, proposals, and technical reports, each ensuring compliance with ISO 13485
  • Perform and oversee testing, data collection, analysis, research, and prototype creation
  • Quality control initiatives both in the US and at global facilities
  • Work with factory engineers on assigned projects, with frequent off-hour communication
  • Active participation in customer sales activities
  • Travel both domestically and internationally as assigned
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with sustaining previously released products
  • Capability of calculating production, labor, and material costs; review of production schedules; and estimate future requirements
  • Skills preparing and presenting product, process, and troubleshooting reports to company ownership, management, and/or customers
  • Demonstrable leadership skills in product development, design, and R&D
  • Experience with development of manufacturing process improvement initiatives   
  • Knowledge of the evaluation of manufacturing/part fabrication processes, assembly, tooling, and materials selection
  • Experience as a team lead on multiple simultaneous development projects in design and manufacture of injection molded plastics, metal forming/stamping 

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • BSME, BS Physics, similar technical degree, or equivalent experience
  • MSME, MS Physics, MBA highly desired
  • Minimum of 10 years in a leadership role in a R&D or design environment with significant exposure to design of thin-walled plastic injection molded parts, cable design, medical device design, or electrical/electronic connector systems development
  • Strong writing skills creating documentation as mandated by ISO 13485, FDA or similar regulations where intimate knowledge of the regulation or standard is required
  • Experience transitioning/supporting domestic and off-shore manufacturing
  • Experience leading teams and conducting/documenting design reviews, troubleshooting, and technical risk analysis activities
  • Significant experience computing tolerance stacks of various materials and systems
  • Ability to obtain a passport/visa and travel domestically and internationally as required
  • Willingness to participate in frequent off-hour discussions with company engineers based in China to ensure collaboration of design and manufacturing activities
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in 3D Modeling with SolidWorks
  • Fluent college-level English speaking and writing skills
  • Experience with design/production of medical devices under ISO 13485
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing methods related to plastics and metal fabrication and experience working with injection molders and metal stampers
